Are you a big fan of midcentury architecture, but couldn’t make the trek out to Palm Springs for 2023’s fabled Modernism Week events? If you’ll be in Los Angeles the weekend of April 22-23, Dirt urges you to consider attending at least one of the upcoming Moon Over Modernism benefits, a worthy architectural encore to that 11-day desert festival, featuring two of architect John Lautner’s most iconic homes.

All proceeds benefit USModernist, the nonprofit educational resource that is the largest open digital resource for modernist architecture. And attendees will be joined at the events by George Smart, veteran host of the long-running USModernist podcast; since 2007, Smart and his nonprofit staff and volunteers have documented over 15,000 modernist houses, while the USModernist Library has scanned over 4 million pages of architecture magazines.

On Saturday, April 22, homeowners Kelly Lynch and Mitch Glazer are hosting an evening cocktail party at Lautner’s painstakingly restored Harvey House. Located in the Hollywood Hills, and overlooking the L.A. skyline, the house was recently featured in the Netflix hit film “The Gray Man” and has also been used in numerous fashion shoots. Attendees will enjoy appetizers and cocktails, with entertainment provided by L.A. jazz vocalist Staci Griesbach and her band. Tickets are $290 per person.

The following afternoon — Sunday, April 23 — everyone is invited to Silvertop, arguably the finest home in all of Silver Lake. Recently and painstakingly restored at great cost by architect Barbara Bestor in collaboration with homeowner Luke Wood, the palatial hilltop spread will be open to the public for timed entry tours. Tickets are $140 per person.

Interested parties can choose to attend just one event, or splurge on an entire weekend of architectural delights. And every participant receives one free year’s USModernist membership in the Mod Squad ($120 value), which affords members discounts to other upcoming USModernist activities.
